William H. Carney

William H. Carney was an African American soldier in the Civil War who is celebrated for his bravery. He served with the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, one of the first Black regiments in the U.S. Army. During a fierce battle at Fort Wagner in 1863, Carney risked his life multiple times to carry a regimental flag, inspiring others to keep fighting despite heavy dangers. His courageous actions earned him the Medal of Honor, making him the first Black soldier to receive this prestigious award. Carney's heroism helped challenge racial stereotypes and demonstrated the vital role of African Americans in the fight for freedom.
