White Adipose Tissue
White adipose tissue (WAT) is the body's main form of fat storage, composed of fat cells called adipocytes. It stores excess energy from food as triglycerides, which can be broken down and used for energy when needed. WAT also cushions and insulates organs, helping maintain body temperature. Beyond energy storage, it releases hormones that regulate hunger, metabolism, and inflammation. While essential for health, excessive accumulation of white fat can lead to obesity and related health issues like diabetes and heart disease. It is found throughout the body, especially under the skin and around internal organs.
