Whig government

A Whig government refers to a political era in Britain (primarily 17th to 19th centuries) associated with the Whig Party, which supported constitutional monarchy, parliamentary sovereignty, and individual rights. Whigs advocated for limiting royal power and expanding parliamentary influence, championing reforms such as increased political participation and civil liberties. Their rise marked shifts away from absolute monarchy toward modern democratic governance. In today’s context, a "Whig government" can also describe a government or political stance favoring gradual reform, parliamentary authority, and constitutional limits, emphasizing progress through legal institutions rather than revolutionary change.
