whiff test
The Whiff test is a quick diagnostic procedure used to detect bacterial infections, specifically bacterial vaginosis, in women. It involves adding a small amount of potassium hydroxide (KOH) to a sample of vaginal discharge on a slide. If a fishy or foul odor appears, it indicates an imbalance of bacteria, suggesting bacterial vaginosis. This test helps healthcare providers determine the presence of an infection based on the characteristic smell, which is caused by volatile amines produced by excess bacteria, aiding in accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
