Western European Union
The Western European Union (WEU) was a defense organization established in 1954 to promote mutual security among Western European countries, mainly through cooperation and collective defense. It aimed to ensure peace and stability during the Cold War by coordinating military efforts and sharing resources. Over time, its responsibilities declined, and in 2011, the WEU was officially dissolved, with many of its functions absorbed into NATO and the European Union. Today, it serves as a historical example of regional cooperation in security matters, emphasizing the importance of collective defense among member nations.
