Wessex (historical region)

Wessex was an ancient Anglo-Saxon kingdom in what is now southern England, existing from the 6th to the 11th century. It was a powerful and influential region, known for its early kings and cultural contributions. The area included modern counties like Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Somerset, and parts of Berkshire and Hampshire. Wessex played a key role in the unification of England and resisted Viking invasions. After the Norman Conquest in 1066, its boundaries declined, but the name persisted as a regional identity in medieval and modern times, symbolizing historical heritage and regional pride.
