Watergate Hotel
The Watergate Hotel, located in Washington, D.C., is best known for its association with the Watergate scandal, which fundamentally affected American politics in the 1970s. In 1972, five men connected to President Richard Nixon's reelection campaign were caught breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters, located in the Watergate complex. The ensuing investigation revealed widespread abuse of power and led to Nixon's resignation in 1974, making it one of the biggest political scandals in U.S. history. The term "Watergate" has since become synonymous with political scandals and corruption.
