Water Framework Directive (WFD)
The Water Framework Directive (WFD) is a European Union law aimed at improving and protecting water quality across member states. Established in 2000, it sets standards for rivers, lakes, and coastal waters, ensuring they are clean, healthy, and support aquatic life. The WFD promotes sustainable water management by requiring countries to develop plans for each water body, assessing its status, and taking action to restore it if needed. The goal is to achieve “good status” for all waters by 2027, fostering collaboration among countries and stakeholders to enhance water ecosystems and safeguard resources for future generations.
