War of the Triple Alliance
The War of the Triple Alliance (1864-1870) was a conflict in South America where Paraguay fought against an alliance of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. Paraguay, under President Francisco Solano López, sought control and regional influence, which led to tensions with its neighbors. The allied countries united to stop Paraguay’s expansion and to protect their own interests. The war was devastating, especially for Paraguay, which suffered heavy losses and destruction. It is considered one of the bloodiest conflicts in Latin American history, fundamentally shaping the region’s political boundaries and power dynamics.
