War of the Schmalkaldic League
The War of the Schmalkaldic League (1546–1547) was a conflict between the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and a Protestant alliance called the Schmalkaldic League, composed mainly of German princes and cities defending Protestantism. Tensions arose over religious reforms and political power. Charles aimed to suppress the growing Protestant movement and maintain Catholic dominance. The league initially scored victories, but Charles eventually defeated the Protestants at the Battle of Mühlberg in 1547. The war resulted in a temporary setback for Protestantism, leading to the Augsburg Interim, a compromise that attempted to temporarily reconcile religious differences within the empire.
