War of the Deccan Succession
The War of the Deccan Succession (1700-1706) was a conflict over control of the Deccan region in India, primarily between the Mughal Empire and the Maratha Confederacy. After the death of the Maratha leader Sambhaji, the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb aimed to conquer the Maratha territories to expand his empire. The Marathas fiercely resisted Mughal advances, leading to a prolonged and destructive war. Ultimately, the Mughal campaign drained resources and weakened their grip, while the Marathas gained strength, setting the stage for their later rise as a major power in India.
