War Department (USA)
The War Department was a U.S. government agency responsible for overseeing the country's military forces, primarily the Army, until 1947. It managed defense planning, training, procurement, and administration of soldiers. In 1947, it was replaced by the Department of Defense, which now oversees all military branches, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines, providing unified strategic leadership. The War Department's historical role was crucial in organizing and supporting U.S. military efforts during conflicts such as World Wars I and II.
