Wampanoag Language Reclamation Project
The Wampanoag Language Reclamation Project is an initiative aimed at revitalizing the Wampanoag language, which is native to the Wampanoag tribes in southeastern Massachusetts. After being dormant for about a century, efforts began in the 1990s to reconstruct and teach the language using historical documents, recordings, and community collaboration. The project focuses on educating both tribal members and the public, fostering cultural identity, and preserving the Wampanoag heritage. This endeavor is part of a broader movement among Indigenous communities to reclaim and revitalize their languages and cultural practices.
