Walkabout
Walkabout is a traditional Aboriginal Australian practice involving a ritual journey undertaken by young men as part of their initiation into adulthood. During a walkabout, participants leave their community to spend an extended period in the wilderness, often living off the land and learning cultural laws, stories, and survival skills from elders. The experience fosters spiritual growth, self-reliance, and a deeper connection to their land and heritage. While historically a rite of passage for Indigenous Australians, the term has also been adopted in popular culture to describe adventurous travel or wandering out of curiosity.
