von Willebrand factor (VWF)

Von Willebrand factor (VWF) is a protein in the blood that plays a crucial role in helping blood clot. It acts as a bridge, helping platelets, which are blood cells responsible for clot formation, stick to injured blood vessel walls. VWF also carries and protects another clotting protein called factor VIII. Without enough VWF or if it doesn't work properly, bleeding can occur more easily or persist longer. It’s essential for stopping bleeding and healing injuries, and issues with VWF can lead to a bleeding disorder known as von Willebrand disease.
