Von Mises Criterion

The Von Mises criterion is a way engineers predict when a material, like metal, will start to permanently deform or break under complex stresses. Instead of looking at individual forces, it combines them into a single value called the shear stress. When this combined shear stress reaches a certain limit (the material’s strength), the material is expected to yield or fail. This criterion helps ensure safety and reliability in designing structures by indicating when a material has been stressed too much and needs adjustment or reinforcement.
