Volkspolizei
Volkspolizei was the unified police force of East Germany (GDR) from 1946 to 1990. It was responsible for maintaining public order, enforcing laws, and ensuring state security within the socialist state. Modernized after World War II, it operated under the control of the Socialist Unity Party and was often involved in suppressing dissent and monitoring citizens to uphold the government’s policies. The Volkspolizei played a key role in East Germany’s internal security and was a symbol of state authority during the Cold War era. After reunification in 1990, it was restructured into the police forces of unified Germany.
