Vocal Fold Paralysis

Vocal fold paralysis occurs when one or both vocal cords (also called vocal folds) can't move properly due to nerve damage. This can result from injury, surgery, or illnesses affecting the nerves controlling the voice box. When the cords don't move as they should, it can cause difficulty speaking, a weak or breathy voice, and sometimes problems with swallowing or choking. The severity and symptoms depend on whether one or both cords are affected and how much movement is lost. Treatment options range from voice therapy to surgery, and recovery varies based on the cause and extent of paralysis.
