Vocal cords

Vocal cords, also known as vocal folds, are two tissue bands located in the larynx (voice box) in your throat. When you speak or sing, air from your lungs passes through your glottis—the space between the cords—causing them to vibrate. These vibrations produce sound, which is then shaped by your mouth, tongue, and lips into words or tones. The tension, length, and tightly controlled movement of the cords determine pitch and volume. Proper function of the vocal cords is essential for clear voice production, and they can be affected by health issues like infections, overuse, or injury.
