Vocal cord

The vocal cords, also known as vocal folds, are two flexible bands of tissue located inside your larynx (voice box). When you speak or sing, air from your lungs passes through the glottis (the space between them), causing the cords to vibrate. These vibrations produce sound, which is then shaped into speech by your mouth, tongue, and lips. The tension, length, and thickness of the cords determine pitch and tone. The vocal cords are essential for communication, and they also help protect your airway during swallowing.
