Visceral Pain Theory

Visceral Pain Theory explains that pain originating from internal organs—like the stomach, intestines, or bladder—is transmitted differently than pain from the skin or muscles. This type of pain is often less localized, making it harder to pinpoint, and can be felt as a deep, aching sensation or discomfort. The theory suggests that internal organs have fewer pain nerves, and their signals often converge with those from other areas in the spinal cord, which can cause referred pain—where the sensation appears elsewhere in the body. This understanding helps in diagnosing and managing internal organ-related pain conditions.
