Viruses and Cancer
Viruses are tiny infectious agents that can invade human cells to reproduce, sometimes leading to health issues. Certain viruses, like human papillomavirus (HPV) or hepatitis B and C, can cause damage to the DNA within cells. This damage may disrupt normal cell growth and division, potentially leading to cancer, which is when cells grow uncontrollably. Not all viruses cause cancer, but those that do can trigger genetic changes that promote tumor development. Understanding this link helps in prevention, through vaccines and safe practices, and in developing targeted treatments for virus-associated cancers.
