Vinca alkaloids

Vinca alkaloids are a group of chemotherapy drugs derived from the periwinkle plant. They work by disrupting the process of cell division, which is essential for cancer cells to grow and spread. Specifically, they prevent the formation of microtubules, structures necessary for cells to divide properly. By halting cell division, Vinca alkaloids help slow or stop the growth of cancerous tumors. These medications are commonly used in treating various cancers, including leukemia, lymphoma, and breast cancer. Despite their effectiveness, they can also affect healthy cells, leading to side effects like hair loss and low blood cell counts.
