Video Fluoroscopic Swallowing Study

A Video Fluoroscopic Swallowing Study, often called a modified barium swallow study, is a medical test that helps doctors evaluate how well a person swallows. During the procedure, the patient drinks a special liquid mixed with a safe, X-ray-visible material called barium. X-ray images are taken in real-time as the person swallows, allowing doctors to see how the food moves through the mouth and throat. This test helps identify swallowing difficulties, assess the risk of choking or aspirating (when food enters the airway), and guides effective treatment plans to improve swallowing safety and efficiency.
