Viceroys of India

The Viceroy of India was the British official who represented the British Crown and was the highest authority in India during colonial rule (1858-1947). Appointed by the British government, the Viceroy managed the administration, worked with local leaders, and oversaw policies affecting the country. Essentially, the Viceroy functioned as the government’s chief executive in India, making decisions on behalf of the Crown, while navigating the complex political and social landscape of Indian society. The role ended when India gained independence in 1947, transitioning to self-governance.
