Viceroyalty of New Granada
The Viceroyalty of New Granada was a large administrative region of the Spanish Empire in the Americas, established in 1717 and based in present-day Colombia. It aimed to manage and govern territories that included modern Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, and parts of Venezuela. The viceroy, appointed by Spain, acted as the king’s representative, overseeing political, military, and economic affairs. This structure helped Spain maintain control over its South American holdings, facilitating trade, defense, and governance until the region moved toward independence in the early 19th century.
