VFSS
VFSS, or Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study, is a medical imaging test that visually evaluates how someone swallows. During the procedure, the patient drinks a small amount of a safe, contrast material that shows up on X-ray. Real-time X-ray images are taken as they swallow different textures of food and liquid, allowing clinicians to observe the movement of the mouth, throat, and esophagus. This helps identify swallowing difficulties, known as dysphagia, determine their cause, and develop appropriate treatment strategies. It's a valuable, non-invasive tool for assessing and improving swallowing safety and efficiency.
