vestibular system anatomy
The vestibular system, located in your inner ear, helps you maintain balance and sense your head’s position and movement. It consists of fluid-filled structures called semicircular canals, which detect rotational movements, and otolith organs (utricle and saccule), which sense linear motion and gravity. Tiny hair cells inside these structures detect shifts in fluid or weight changes, sending signals to your brain. This system works with your eyes and muscles to keep your posture, coordinate movements, and help you stay balanced during daily activities.
