vested interests

Vested interests refer to specific groups or individuals who benefit from maintaining the current state of affairs. These interests motivate them to support policies or decisions that protect or enhance their advantages, even if it might not be for the broader good. For example, a company might oppose regulations that could reduce its profits because it benefits financially from the status quo. Recognizing vested interests helps us understand why certain issues are difficult to change and why some groups strongly advocate for their preferences.
