ventricular assist devices
Ventricular assist devices (VADs) are mechanical pumps that help the heart pump blood when it's weakened or damaged, often due to heart failure. They are implanted inside the body, with tubes connecting to the heart and blood vessels, and are powered by a device outside the body. VADs can support the left, right, or both sides of the heart, improving blood flow and organ function. They are used as a bridge to heart transplantation or as a long-term solution for patients who are not candidates for transplant, improving quality of life and survival.
