Ventilator Weaning
Ventilator weaning is the process of gradually reducing and eventually stopping mechanical assistance for a patient’s breathing. It involves assessing the patient’s strength, lung function, and ability to breathe independently. Healthcare providers carefully monitor vital signs, oxygen levels, and respiratory effort to determine readiness. The goal is to support the patient’s transition from mechanical ventilation to natural breathing while minimizing the risk of failure or complication. Successful weaning indicates the patient's recovery of sufficient lung function and respiratory muscle strength to breathe on their own.
