Veno-arterial ECMO (VA ECMO)
Veno-arterial ECMO (VA ECMO) is a medical device that provides support for the heart and lungs when they are unable to function properly. It works by removing blood from the body's veins, oxygenating and pumping it back into the arteries, effectively bypassing the heart and lungs. This helps ensure organs receive enough oxygen and nutrients while the underlying condition is treated. VA ECMO is used in critical situations like severe heart failure or cardiac arrest, giving the patient a chance to recover or stabilize until their native heart and lung function improve.
