Velaglucerase alfa is a medication used to treat Gaucher disease, a genetic disorder where a certain fat-absorbing enzyme is missing or not working properly. This enzyme helps break down specific fats in your cells. Without it, these fats build up, causing problems like enlarged organs, bone issues, and blood abnormalities. Velaglucerase alfa is a lab-made version of the natural enzyme, replacing what the body lacks. It is administered through an IV infusion, typically every two weeks, helping reduce symptoms and prevent complications associated with Gaucher disease.
