Vegetative Roof Systems

Vegetative roof systems, also known as green roofs, involve layering live plants and soil on top of a building’s roof. They provide insulation, reduce stormwater runoff, improve air quality, and help manage urban heat. These systems consist of a waterproof membrane, a drainage layer, a growing medium (soil), and plants suited to rooftop conditions. They can be extensive (with low-maintenance plants) or intensive (with a variety of plants and even small trees). Green roofs enhance environmental sustainability, increase building lifespan, and create natural spaces in urban areas.
