Vassalage System

The vassalage system was a social and political structure in medieval Europe, where land was exchanged for loyalty and service. A lord would grant land, known as a fief, to a vassal (a lesser noble or knight) in return for military support and other obligations. This established a hierarchical relationship: the lord provided protection and land, while the vassal pledged loyalty and service, often leading troops in battle. This system created a network of allegiances that defined feudal society, ensuring stability and protecting both land and people during a time when centralized authority was limited.
