Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP)

Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is a small protein that acts as a messenger in the body, helping to regulate various functions primarily in the nervous and digestive systems. It stimulates the production of enzymes in the pancreas, relaxes smooth muscles, dilates blood vessels, and promotes water and electrolyte secretion in the intestines. VIP plays a key role in maintaining healthy digestion, blood flow, and immune responses. It is also involved in certain neurological processes. Abnormal levels of VIP can be associated with medical conditions such as diarrhea, flushing, or tumors called VIPomas.
