Varicose veins
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that usually appear visible and bulging beneath the skin, most commonly in the legs. They develop when the valves inside these veins become weakened or damaged, causing blood to flow backward and pool. This increases pressure and causes the veins to stretch and enlarge. Factors like genetics, age, pregnancy, obesity, and prolonged standing can contribute to their development. While often harmless, varicose veins can sometimes cause discomfort, swelling, aching, or skin changes. Treatment options include lifestyle modifications, compression stockings, or procedures to remove or close the affected veins.
