Van Dijk theory
Van Dijk’s theory focuses on how language and discourse shape and reflect social power and dominance. He argues that social inequalities are maintained through communication practices, such as the way stories are told, topics are emphasized, and words are chosen. In other words, language is not neutral; it can reinforce existing power structures and social hierarchies. By analyzing discourses—spoken or written texts—Van Dijk reveals how language contributes to societal inequalities, influences perceptions, and sustains social control, highlighting the importance of critically examining communication in understanding social dynamics.
