Van der Meer (Theo van der Meer)
Theo van der Meer was a Dutch physicist known for his work in particle accelerators. He developed a technique called the "Van der Meer scan," which involves precisely moving particle beams across each other to measure and optimize their overlap. This method allows scientists to accurately determine the number of particle collisions in an accelerator like CERN's Large Hadron Collider, leading to more precise experimental results. His contributions significantly improved the accuracy of particle physics measurements and earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1984, shared with Simon van der Meer and Carlo Rubbia.
