USS Thresher

USS Thresher was a U.S. nuclear-powered submarine commissioned in 1961, tasked with deep-sea defense and research. On April 10, 1963, during a test, it sank off the coast of Massachusetts, resulting in the loss of all 129 crew members. The disaster was caused by a combination of mechanical failures and design issues that led to flooding and loss of power. The tragedy prompted significant improvements in submarine safety protocols, technology, and emergency procedures, shaping modern submarine engineering and operational standards.
