USS Nautilus (SSN-571)
USS Nautilus (SSN-571) was the world's first operational nuclear-powered submarine, launched in 1954 by the U.S. Navy. Its nuclear reactor allowed it to operate underwater for long durations without surfacing, revolutionizing submarine technology. Nautilus could travel faster and remain submerged longer than earlier diesel-electric submarines, enhancing strategic military capabilities. It played a key role in Cold War efforts, including Arctic exploration and covert patrols. Decommissioned in 1980, Nautilus is now a museum in Groton, Connecticut, symbolizing advances in naval engineering and underwater warfare.
