USS Iwo Jima

USS Iwo Jima (LPH-2) was a United States Navy amphibious assault ship, commissioned in 1961. It served as a platform for launching Marines and their equipment from the sea onto hostile shores, facilitating amphibious landings during conflicts like the Vietnam War and operations in the Middle East. The ship featured a large helicopter deck, a well deck for landing craft, and advanced communications and command facilities. Named after the Battle of Iwo Jima, it symbolized Marine Corps resilience. Decommissioned in 1993, USS Iwo Jima played a vital role in projecting U.S. military power and supporting amphibious operations over three decades.
