USS Indianapolis
The USS Indianapolis was a U.S. Navy heavy cruiser launched in 1931, known for its role in World War II. It delivered crucial parts of the atomic bomb to the Pacific, facilitating the Hiroshima attack. After completing a mission, it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in 1945, leading to one of the worst naval disasters in U.S. history. Many crew members were lost at sea, and survivors endured exposure, dehydration, and shark attacks while awaiting rescue. The sinking highlighted the importance of anti-submarine tactics and prompted improvements in naval safety and emergency procedures.
