Universal City Studios v. Reimerdes
Universal City Studios v. Reimerdes (2005) was a court case where Universal and other studios sued a website operator, Reimerdes, for posting tools that allowed users to bypass Digital Rights Management (DRM) protections on DVDs and DVDs’ software. The court ruled that distributing such tools violated the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which aims to protect copyrighted works from unauthorized copying and distribution. This case reinforced that sharing or distributing technology intended to circumvent copyright protections can be legally prohibited, even if the goal isn't to infringe copyright directly.
