United Wa State Army (UWSA)

The United Wa State Army (UWSA) is a major ethnic armed group in Myanmar, primarily composed of the Wa people. It operates within Wa State, a self-governing territory in eastern Myanmar, and is considered one of the country's strongest insurgent armies. Historically, the UWSA was formed as a militia allied with communist China during Myanmar’s internal conflicts. Today, it functions with a high degree of autonomy, maintaining its own security and governance structures. Although it officially signed ceasefire agreements with the Myanmar government, it continues to wield significant influence in local affairs and regional security.
