United States Selective Service System

The United States Selective Service System is a government agency responsible for maintaining information on potentially eligible males for military conscription. While the U.S. currently relies on an all-volunteer military, men aged 18-25 are required by law to register within 30 days of their 18th birthday. This registration ensures readiness in case a draft is reinstated. Registration is mandatory but does not mean being drafted automatically. The system helps the government quickly identify and organize potential volunteers if a national emergency necessitates conscription.
