United States Lighthouse Board

The United States Lighthouse Board was a government agency responsible for maintaining and operating lighthouses, life-saving stations, and navigation aids from 1852 to 1910. It was tasked with ensuring safe maritime navigation along U.S. coastlines by installing and managing lighthouse lights, fog signals, and related equipment. Typically composed of professionals from the Navy, Army, and civilian experts, the Board coordinated efforts to improve safety for ships and mariners. In 1910, its responsibilities transitioned to the U.S. Lighthouse Service, which later became part of the Coast Guard.
