United States House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC)
The House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) was a U.S. congressional committee active primarily in the 1930s to 1950s. It investigated alleged communist influences and activities within the United States, particularly targeting government employees, entertainment industry figures, and others suspected of harboring or promoting communist ideas. Its investigations often involved hearings that sought to reveal subversive activities, leading to blacklisting and social stigma for those accused. While intended to protect national security during the Cold War, HUAC’s methods and focus became controversial, raising concerns about civil liberties and due process.
