United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia
The United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) was a UN mission from 1992 to 1993, established to help restore peace, stability, and democracy after years of conflict and the Khmer Rouge’s rule. Its main tasks included overseeing a ceasefire, distributing voter registration, organizing democratic elections, and helping rebuild the government and civil institutions. UNTAC aimed to support Cambodia’s transition from war to peace, ensuring that all factions cooperated and that the country could establish a legitimate, functioning government through a fair electoral process.
