United National Independence Party (UNIP)

The United National Independence Party (UNIP) is a political party in Zambia, founded in 1959 to promote national independence and unite various groups against colonial rule. Led by Kenneth Kaunda, it played a key role in Zambia’s liberation from British colonialism, achieving independence in 1964. The party emphasized African socialism and national unity. After independence, UNIP governed Zambia, instituting a one-party state under Kaunda's leadership until multiparty elections were reintroduced in the 1990s. Though it has since lost influence, UNIP remains a significant part of Zambia's political history and identity.
